Note: What are chargebacks?
If a merchant’s account is credited with a payment that then has to be paid back, this is called a chargeback. A chargeback is not the same as a refund, which is a payment the merchant initiates and manages. A chargeback is requested by the card issuing company (for example, Visa or MasterCard).
There are two main reasons why a chargeback occurs. The first case is when a merchant makes a mistake when accepting a payment – for instance, accepting a payment from a credit card that has expired. The second reason for a chargeback is when the transaction is disputed by the card issuing company. This can happen if the there is a suspicion that a fraudulent transaction may have occurred.
SecurePay charges a fee of $25 if a chargeback occurs.
